Objective Toexploretheassociationbetweenperipheralretinaldefocusandmyopiainadolescents.
Methods Thisstudyencompassed192adolescents(192righteyes),agedbetweeneightandfifteenyears,whosought
treatmentatIneyeHospitalofChengduUniversityofTCM from October2022toApril2023.Basedonthesphericalequiva
lent(SE),thepatientsweredividedintothreegroups:Emmetropia(E),low myopia(LM),andmoderatemyopia
(MM),witheachgroupcomprising64patients(64righteyes).Aftermydriaticrefraction,theSEvaluesweredocumen
ted.Ocularbiologicalparameters,includingaxiallength(AL),centralcornealthickness(CCT),lensthickness(LT),and
keratometryvalues(K1,K2),wereobtainedusingIOLMaster900.Multispectralrefractiontopographywasemployedto
measuretheretinaldefocus:positivevaluesindicatedhyperopicdefocus,whilenegativeonesrepresentedmyopicdefocus.
Withthemacularfoveaasthecenter,thetotalretinaldefocusvaluewasrecordedasTRDV.Theringpartition(eccentrici
ty)wasdividedinto0°-10°、>10°-20°、>20°-30°、>30°-40°、>40°-53°,whichwasrecordedasRDV0°-10°,RDV
10°-20°,RDV20°-30°,RDV30°-40°,andRDV40°-53°,respectively;thequadrantswererecordedasRDVSuperior
(RDVS),RDVInferior(RDVI),RDVTemporal(RDVT)andRDVNasal(RDVN),respectively.ThevarianceofRDV
acrossdifferentrangeswasanalyzedusingOneWayANOVAandnonparametrictests.TheassociationsbetweenSE,AL
andRDVwereexaminedusingSpearmanandPearsoncorrelationanalyses.Results TheRDV20°-30°,RDV30°-40°
andRDV40°-53°ofGroupsE,LMandMMallexhibitedhyperopicdefocus.Statisticallysignificantdifferenceswereidenti
fiedinTRDV,RDV10°-20°,RDV20°-30°,RDV30°-40°,RDV40°-53°,RDVS,RDVTandRDVNamongthethree
groups(allP<0.05).TRDV,RDV20°-30°,RDV30°-40°,RDV40°-53°,RDVS,RDVT,andRDVNwerefoundtobe
negativelycorrelatedwithSEwhilepositivelycorrelatedwithAL(allP<0.05).RDV0°-10°andRDVIwereuncorrelated
withbothSEandAL(allP>0.05);RDV10°-20°waspositivelycorrelatedwithAL(P=0.012)whileuncorrelatedwith
SE(P=0.233).Conclusion Peripheralretinalhyperopicdefocustendstoadvancewithescalatingeccentricityandmy
opia.Peripheralretinaldefocusisasymmetrical.Peripheral(10°-53°),superior,nasalandtemporalretinaldefocusmay
becloselyrelatedtothedevelopmentofmyopia.
